Summer in the City Champions
Who are the SITC champions?
To answer this question we want to tell you a little story…
SITC has been operational for quite some time now and a few years ago one of our campers that was now ’too old’ for camp was at a bit of a loose end with what to do with himself over the summer holidays so he reached out to us to ask if he could come into camp and learn how to be a SITC coach. What a great idea.
His journey
He joined the team back in 2014 and volunteered with us for a full summer; helping, learning and integrating himself into the SITC Team. He was taught how to coach, how to organise and arrange sessions, what works best with larger groups, what activities work better with smaller groups, fire alarm protocols, first aid training and how to be authoritative when he needed to be. We watched his confidence grow from strength to strength and the following year he joined the team in a more official capacity. It is an absolute pleasure and delight to acknowledge that our champion is still with us and is now a fully fledged member of our team.
Inspiring and special
Coaching children and seeing the joy and happiness in their faces when they try something new or get it right for the first time or score the game winning goal is one of the most gratifying feelings a coach can have. This is something that our champions get to see on a daily basis at one of our holiday camps. It is a special thing to be part of, and they want to be part of it too. So they watch and learn and grow as young people. Confidence is improved and is a tool that can be carried in all other areas of their lives especially whilst they are going through the stresses of 5th and 6th year exams.
